Play: Paw Parks and Beaches

The beach becomes a sandy dog-run, the bay a backdrop for a great game of “fetch” along the Palma Sola Causeway in Bradenton. Inland, visit Happy Tails Canine Park (Bradenton) and Dog Leg Park (Palmetto).

Stay: Hot Dog Digs

Man’s best friend will get a friendly reception in Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, and on the mainland in Bradenton, with more than 35 pet-friendly properties to choose from. You’ll find 21 of those properties on Anna Maria Island, which was recently named one of the 14 Best Islands for Family Vacations by Islands magazine.

Among the properties welcoming well-mannered pets, in Bradenton you can go modern (Best Western Atrea Manatee Hotel) or classic (Days Inn Historic Bradenton). In Ellenton, park your paws at GuestHouse Inn. On Longboat Key, the grand Hilton Longboat Key Beachfront Resort contrasts with the quaint Rolling Waves Beach Cottages. On Anna Maria Island, Tortuga Inn Beach Resort and Tradewinds Resort allow pets in select garden apartments, villas and cottages and Dawg Daze Villa, a cozy rental home, extends a friendly invitation.

Several vacation rental companies and area campgrounds also allow pets as well. For more information, please click here.

Chow: Dining with Dogs

While most restaurants with outdoor seating allow leashed pets, it’s best to ask first. In Lakewood Ranch, dine at MacAllisters Grill and Tavern; then walk to Woof Gang Bakery for treats and accessories. In Bradenton, Mattison’s Riverside permits dogs on its deck; Bonni Bakes creates homemade goodies for you and your pet; and Thursday nights bring Yappy Hour to the Lost Kangaroo Pub. On Anna Maria Island, grab breakfast or lunch outside at Ginny's and Jane E’s.

Care: Emergency Vets
