This summer, join the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch for a free, up-close-and-personal viewing experience of nesting loggerhead sea turtles. Accompany their volunteers as they scour the 7.5-mile stretch of beach during their daily morning tours (June through August), marking off the threatened loggerhead and endangered green sea turtle nests and making sure our flippered friends are returning to the water safely. Their host of trained volunteers kept 152 nests safe in 2009 alone. Island accommodations and restaurants along our beaches are also outfitted with special lighting to not distract the turtles from their nests through the season.
