If you’re flying to Florida this winter for spring break, consider visiting Bradenton, one of central west Florida's oldest cities. Located along the Gulf of Mexico next to Sarasota and about 45 miles south of Tampa, Bradenton is an ideal spring fling. It’s less crowded than some of the more touristy spots in the Sunshine State, yet you won’t be bored. Numerous parks, museums, and a beautiful beach make Bradenton an idyllic destination. Highlights include:
South Florida Museum
The South Florida Museum is actually three attractions in one. Not only will you learn about Florida’s prehistoric past, but you also get to visit the Bishop Planetarium and see Snooty at the Parker Manatee Aquarium, all for one admission. On the first two floors, life-size realistic dioramas of Ice Age mammals that once roamed southwest Florida 12,000 years ago will definitely get your attention. The second floor aquarium houses Snooty, the oldest living manatee born in captivity and undeniably the cutest creature at the museum! Snooty’s specially-designed 60,000-gallon pool offers both above and below water viewing, so it’s easy to get a good look at this playful Florida icon. Shows in the state-of-the-art domed Planetarium theater change often, so depending on when you visit, you may learn about black holes and extreme planets, or take a journey through galaxies, nebulae, and the Solar System.
The Village of the Arts
Art lovers will be delighted at the Village where 40 artists offering everything from fine art, jewelry, ceramics, small furniture, clothing and collectibles, to gourmet foods. The 1920s style bungalows that house the eclectic mix of artists and their work are as interesting as the art itself. Special events and exhibits are held year-round, and if you’re there on the first Friday or Saturday of the month, don’t miss the Village’s special ArtWalks.
Mixon Fruit Farms
What began in 1939 with 20 acres and a roadside stand has grown into a 350-acre grove complete with processing plant, retail store, wildlife refuge, and more. Hop aboard the Orange Blossom Express to tour the grove and learn the history of Florida’s citrus industry (second only to tourism). Did you know that fruit is twisted off branches, not pulled? Inhale deeply as you travel on the tram-- the sweet fragrance of orange blossoms permeates the air! For those who like to shop, Mixon Fruit Farms also offers 12,000 square feet of every Florida souvenir imaginable. You won’t leave hungry either—food and drink samples are offered to everyone who walks in the door, plus there’s a large deli. Try the key lime fudge or the orange/vanilla swirl ice cream made with fresh orange juice—both are delicious!
Bradenton Beach
When you’re ready for some white sand and gentle surf, the city of Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island is the place to discover the laid-back charm of “Old Florida.” Bradenton Beach occupies the southernmost third of Anna Maria Island (the beach and the town share the same name), stretching from the public beaches of Coquina and Cortez, north to the city of Holmes Beach. You’ll find a lot of pure white sand and swaying sea oats, but not a lot of tourists. Perfect for relaxing!
