Our universe consists of just four basic parts: Space, Time, Matter and Energy. They are woven together into a tapestry that we experience almost seamlessly, so we rarely give them, individually, much thought. But if we really want to appreciate the universe in which we live, we ought to pay a little attention to the parts that make up the whole. So, we (Jeff Rodgers and some special guests) thought we’d give each of these major aspects of the universe some thought. Matter and Energy will be included in the Summer program lineup.
Part 3- Matter
What is Matter? Air. Water. Dirt. Table. Car. Computer. Planet. Star. Galaxy. From our perspective, there sure is a lot of stuff. This month we’ll be taking a look at the things that make the stuff that clutters up our universe. Then we’ll consider that all of that stuff seems to account for only 4% of the universe as a whole. So we’ll take a look at WiMPs and MaCHOs, lead contenders for Dark Matter, too.
Admission is free. Beer, wine, sodas and snacks available for purchase. Reservations appreciated.

Imagine a visitor from outer space looking down on a typical city. From a distance, humans would look like ants, mindlessly scurrying about along established trails, stopping at red lights, moving forward at green lights and accelerating really fast for a short distance at yellow lights. "What a lot of mindless, soulless life-forms these creatures are!" the visitor would reason. Without a space microscope, the outer space visitor would completely miss the subtleties of communication and other intelligent interactions among humans that occur everywhere all the time. Likewise, without a microscope, we humans have missed the subtleties of communication and other intelligent interactions among our near neighbors, the fire ant. Please join me for an evening of "ant movies" and discussion about the other pinnacle of social evolution, the ants.
