Stand-up paddling (SUP), a marriage of surfing and kayaking, has become a global sport. Even surf legend Laird Hamilton is doing it.
It’s fun and a great workout too. Learn with a local guide from Native Rentals/Native Sports (941-778-7757) on a Laird Hamilton-designed Surf Tech board.
“Stand up paddling is easy to learn, and once you do, you can explore some of the most beautiful places around the island,” says company owner Shawn Duytschaver. “We often paddle around Anna Maria Island Sound, to Gilligan’s Island for a sunset bonfire on the beach.”
You can paddle where dolphins play, and, when you’re feeling confident, explore a tunnel of mangroves. “It’s like walking on water,” Duytschaver adds. Sure beats the gym.
